BATTLE THE GREY
2016 17.1hh Draft Cross
Price: $45,000
Location: Roswell, New Mexico
Hunting Experience
Battle the Grey has hunted with Juan Tomas Hounds and Caza Ladrón Hounds during his first season, participating in four hunts. Despite being in his first formal season, he has demonstrated excellent natural aptitude and composure in the field.
He has worked successfully as a Whipper-in mount and is equally comfortable in 2nd and 3rd Field. He has proven to be:
Respectful and steady around hounds
Unbothered by activity and commotion in the field
Willing and forward to any line presented
Jumping & Terrain
Battle comfortably and confidently jumps 2’6”, including:
Ditches
Banks
Natural desert obstacles
Stadium jumps
He has shown a remarkable willingness to tackle unfamiliar questions. Notably, his first exposure to water (captured on video) was met with curiosity and cooperation—an encouraging sign of his trainability and mindset.
He has hunted barefoot, including over the challenging volcanic terrain of the Camelback fixture, without sensitivity—even while working actively in demanding conditions.
Temperament & Rideability
Battle is a kind, level-headed horse with a highly desirable disposition:
Quiet and mannerly on the ground
Stands calmly around children, dogs, and equipment
Loads and travels well
Straightforward under saddle
He is best suited for an intermediate rider, though his temperament would allow a capable novice to feel comfortable and secure.
He does require some management for the farrier, but this has been easily handled with light sedation or appropriate exercise prior to trimming.
Background & Potential
Battle came to me from a western performance background, where his quality was recognized but not fully developed within a hunting context. Since transitioning, he has shown exceptional adaptability and a genuine aptitude for fox hunting.
With continued exposure and refinement, I believe he has the potential to develop further into:
A highly reliable hunt horse
A competitive mount for lower-level eventing or three-day sport
Professional References
Both the Huntsman and Masters of Juan Tomas and Caza Ladrón Hounds are familiar with Battle and can provide favorable assessments of his conduct and performance in the field.
